Ms. Pickel specializes in commercial litigation and regulatory compliance.  An alum of Saul Ewing LLP, a law firm employing over 250 attorneys, and a former law clerk for the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Ms. Pickel has helped corporate, non-profit, and individual clients resolve disputes, comply with complex statutory frameworks, and investigate internal and external allegations of wrong-doing.  Her practice has focused on the insurance and higher education industries as well as white collar criminal law.  She has appeared in state and federal courts throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania at the trial and appellate levels, including the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Ms. Pickel has extensive experience:

  • Litigating dozens of long-term disability and life insurance claims under ERISA in federal court
  • Prosecuting property tax appeals and negotiating fair tax assessments for her clients
  • Conducting internal investigations in response to whistleblower claims and government investigations by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, SEC, and U.S. Department of Education
  • Advising colleges and universities on regulatory matters including sexual harassment laws and regulations, Title IX, the Clery Act, and the Violence Against Women Act, as well as responding to inquiries by the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights
  • Developing sexual harassment policies and procedures
  • Litigating allegations related to business torts, violations of non-compete agreements, and breach of contract
  • Conducting trials, arbitrations, mediations, settlement conferences, discovery, depositions, and witness interviews

Representative Matters:

  • Winning a precedent-setting decision on behalf of a commercial property-owner in a zoning matter before the Supreme Court of New Jersey
  • Responding to allegations of off-label marketing practices for a global medical device manufacturer and former employees of a global pharmaceutical company
  • Investigating broad-ranging allegations of Clery Act violations by the Department of Education against a large university
  • Winning a significant verdict for a power company at an administrative trial
  • Obtaining judgment in favor of a construction company in an international arbitration applying foreign law to a contract dispute
  • Successfully challenging a public contract solicitation for state police helicopters on behalf of a manufacturer
  • Assisting in a two-week bench trial in New York federal court alleging historical CERCLA violations over many decades

Ms. Pickel has been a frequent contributor to various publications on topics ranging from regulatory compliance, criminal law, and litigation strategy to best practices for reducing conflicts of interest and conducting internal investigations. Ms. Pickel has also provided legal advice on a pro bono basis to victims of Hurricane Sandy and homeless U.S. veterans.

She is admitted to practice in New Jersey, the District of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the Third Circuit.
